what is s2c?

Spelling to Communicate (S2C) is a transformative communication method tailored for individuals who are neurodiverse, including those with diverse abilities, who are non-speaking, minimally speaking, or have unreliable speech. This approach presumes competence in all individuals, acknowledging that challenges in fluent or consistent speech do not equate to a lack of understanding or intelligence. Many individuals with motor and sensory differences face difficulties in regulating their bodies, which can hinder their ability to express complex thoughts and ideas. S2C addresses this gap by offering a structured method for communication through spelling.

The foundation of S2C is rooted in the work of Elizabeth Vosseller, a pioneer in communication methods for non-speaking individuals. Her vision and commitment have significantly shaped the S2C methodology and advocated for the rights and capabilities of spellers. Elizabeth co-founded the International Association for Spelling to Communicate (I-ASC), an organization dedicated to promoting and supporting the use of S2C globally. I-ASC offers training, resources, and community for practitioners and families, ensuring that the S2C practice is both accessible and effective. i-asc.org

At the heart of S2C is the belief that every individual has the ability to think deeply, learn, and connect with the world. S2C begins with letterboards and gradually progresses to typing on a keyboard, giving individuals the freedom to express their thoughts without the constraints of traditional Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems. While many AAC methods rely on pre-programmed words or phrases, S2C harnesses the full potential of the alphabet, offering endless opportunities for individuals to share their ideas, thoughts, and emotions. This approach empowers spellers to communicate more fully and freely, fostering a greater sense of autonomy.

Through ongoing practice and expert guidance from trained practitioners and Communication Regulation Partners (CRPs), spellers refine their motor skills for accurate spelling and develop the self-regulation necessary for effective communication. This journey promotes independence and allows spellers to engage more authentically with others. As S2C continues to gain recognition, more individuals and families are turning to it as a powerful tool for self-expression. The method’s individualized support helps spellers unlock their potential, paving the way for greater independence and improving their overall quality of life.
